Divya Bharti was considered one of the most popular, talented and vivacious actresses of her time,  and the news of her sudden untimely death left everyone shocked. The actress died on  April 5, 1993, at the age of 19, and she reportedly fell to her death from the fifth floor of her Versova apartment. According to the police files, Divya Bharti was in an inebriated state and was walking on the ledge of her balcony, when she slipped and fell from the fifth floor of her apartment that she shared with her producer-husband Sajid Nadiadwala. Now, it’s her 27th death anniversary today and speculations about her mysterious death float on the Internet and refuse to die down.

That tragic night of her fatal fall, Divya Bharti’s domestic help Amrita, her designer friend Neeta Lulla and her doctor husband Shyam had come over and were chatting when Divya Bharti fell off the balcony. It was reported that she was still breathing when she was rushed to Cooper hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. As per the reports, she died of fatal head injuries. The police case was closed, and was declared an ‘unnatural death’ by the police in charge of the investigation. However, her fans do not believe that was all that happened, and several conspiracy theories still swirl on the Internet.

While many claimed it was suicide, some think it could have been a murder. However, while speaking to India Today, Divya Bharti’s father Om Prakash Bharti had said that there was no question of her death being suicide or murder.

He said, “There was no question of suicide or murder. Yes, she did drink a bit but how much can you drink in half an hour? And she was not depressed. She was the kind to give you depression!” He further added, “It was an accident. She sat on the ledge, lost her balance and fell. Sadly, all flats had grills except hers. Cars would always be parked below but that night there was not a single one. She fell directly on the ground. I was shocked and lost my senses. But eventually you have to face the truth.”

It was at the age of 16 that Divya Bharti made her debut with the Telugu film Bobbili Raja opposite Venkatesh followed by Vishwatma opposite Sunny Deol. She went on to act in over a dozen other films in her short career span, and made a mark in the Hindi film industry.
