Meena Kumari, who was also famously called 'Tragedy Queen' in the Hindi film industry and in her career spanning over 33 years, starred in many films and delivered multiple hits. Apart from her professional life, her personal life used to also make headlines for multiple reasons. She was married to director Kamal Amrohi, and was allegedly a victim of domestic violence and had reportedly turned alcoholic to deal with hard times.

After going through a difficult time for many years, she died in 1972. Her close friend and actress Nargis Dutt had come to pay her last respect during the final rites.

In a column written for an Urdu magazine, Nargis Dutt had congratulated Meena Kumari upon her demise. She began her column, "Congratulations on your death. I have never said this earlier. Meena, today your baaji (elder sister) congratulates you on your death and asks you to never step into this world again. This place is not meant for people like you". She then went on to reveal a horrific story when she saw Meena Kumari with a swollen eye after she heard noises of intense violence from her room. She shared, "One night I saw her panting in the garden, I told her, 'Why don't you rest, you look very tired. She said, 'Baaji, resting is not in my destiny. I will rest just one time.' Next day, I saw her eyes were swollen. I caught hold of Kamal Amrohi's secretary Baqar & spoke to him in direct terms, 'Why do you people want to kill Meena?' She has worked enough for your sake, for how long is she going to feed you? He said, when the right time comes, we will rest her."

Soon after, Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi parted ways. But she turned to alcoholism and it had weakened her liver. In her column, Nargis Dutt also mentioned that after Dharmendra entered Meena's life, it gave her some form of happiness. However, owing to a misunderstanding, he walked out of her life and she was heartbroken.
