Megastar Mithun Chakraborty is celebrating his 71st birthday today. He has appeared in more than 350 films across different languages. He made his acting debut in 1976 with the drama Mrigayaa, for which he was awarded National Film Award for Best Actor. This was the first Indian film to gross Rs. 100 crore at the box office. Before his debut in the industry, he reportedly had suicidal thoughts and struggled a lot to make his mark in the industry.
In an old interview with ETC in 2011, the disco dancer revealed that he did not have a roof over his head when he was trying his luck in Bollywood. While reflecting back on his struggling days, Mithun said, “I won't talk about struggling days because it would break the spirits of many people. Everyone struggles, but my struggle has been so much...ki samajh lijiye footpath se aaya hoon, literally (I have literally come from the footpath). In Mumbai city, I have spent many days where I sometimes slept in Five Gardens, and sometimes slept in front of someone's hostel. A friend of mine got me a membership to Matunga Gymkhana so I could use the bathroom. I would go there in the morning and get fresh, brush my teeth, and then go on my way. Upon leaving I didn't use to know where would I get my next meal or where will I sleep.”
The Mard actor further added that he doesn’t want to break the spirit of the actors who are struggling by describing his journey. He couldn’t go back to Kolkata due to his political background. He pointed out that he had never given up his spirit.
Meanwhile, Mithun Chakraborty made his OTT debut with ‘Bestseller’ which was released in February 2022. He also played the vital character in the path-breaking film ‘The Kashmir Files.’
