Bollywood celebrities have often been bashed for choosing to maintain their silence on important issues concerning the nation. During the protests against CAA, and the violence at Jamia Millia, social media was furious about the mute stand of Bollywood biggies. This time around, it’s their silence on the brutal violence that took place in JNU on Sunday night that has roused people’s ire on social media. While celebrities like Swara Bhasker, Riteish Deshmukh, Rajkummar Rao took to Twitter and raised their voice, it was the big names of Bollywood that stayed mum. However, Deepika Padukone, who was in Delhi to promote her film Chhapaak, visited the JNU campus, extending her support to the students.
Deepika Padukone’s firm stand on the JNU attack was praised by many, right from Swara Bhasker, Sayani Gupta, Vikrant Massey to filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. Her decision also evoked a lot of backlash from a section of people who took a call to boycott her upcoming film Chhapaak. But there were also those who supported her and were in awe of her. Deepika’s courage inspired Anurag Kashyap to even change his Twitter profile picture to Deepika’s pic from last night. Pictures of Deepika Padukone standing by Aishe Ghosh, President of JNU Students Union, had gone viral on the Internet.
