Brahmastra, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt was one of the most awaited films of 2022 and it finally hit the theatres on September 9. However, amid all the fanfare, the film went on to receive mixed reviews from fans and critics alike.
Despite the mixed reviews, fans wonder how a film could earn Rs 75 crore on the first-day itself! But, a few reports went on to claim that Brahmastra had raked in only around Rs 37 crore on its opening day. Well, this discrepancy left fans confused.
Still, the question remains, is Brahmastra really doing well at the box office?
The confusion around Brahmastra's box office numbers sparked as the makers shared the film’s worldwide gross collection on social media while most of the reports, on the other hand, include the domestic figures.
To note there is a major difference between them. The net figure is usually calculated by deducting taxes from the gross total.
“The gross figure is a reflection of how much a film made at the ticket window through the sale of tickets. Net is usually calculated after deducting state and central GST from the total. Then, in Tamil Nadu, we also have the Local Body Entertainment Tax,” tracker Ramesh Bala was quoted as saying by IndiaToday.
The report also mentioned that most trade websites use net collections as the yardstick for measuring a film’s performance.
“In India, we talk about the net collection to avoid any confusion on account of different tax slabs and changes in the distributor share arrangement,” said trade analyst Joginder Tuteja.
With that being said, trade analyst, Komal Nahta believes there’s nothing wrong in sharing the gross collections of a film, reported IndiaToday.
In conclusion, Brahmastra exceeded the fan's expectations at the box office in its opening week and the action-adventure drama grossed Rs 225 crore worldwide to emerge as the best performer of Ranbir’s career.
“Brahmastra collected Rs 122 crore net in India in three days and this includes the South versions," says Tuteja.
As per the IndiaToday report, the film subsequently had a decent hold on Monday and Tuesday, which helped it pass what the trade calls the 'weekend test'.
“Rs 16 crore came in on Monday. It further made around Rs 14 crore on Tuesday,” adds Tuteja.
“It grossed around Rs 6 crore in Tamil Nadu in three days. This is a good figure for a Hindi film with a dubbed version. That said, there was a drop on Monday,” said Ramesh Bala.
Brahmastra was released in cinema halls on September 09, 2022. Besides Alia and Ranbir, the film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, and Mouni Roy in pivotal roles. Reportedly, the second part of the film will be released in theatres in December 2025.
