Rajkummar Rao’s Newton, which is India's official entry to the Oscars began on a dull note and collected a mere Rs 96 lakh on its first day.

But to everyone's surprise, Day 2 showed massive growth. Trade Analyst, Taran Adarsh tweeted, "#Newton shows REMARKABLE 162.5% GROWTH on Sat... Fri 96 lakhs, Sat 2.52 cr. Total: ₹ 3.48 cr. India biz."

So, will Newton be one of those classic pieces that become a sleeper hit?

Also, belatedly, the critically acclaimed film Newton was declared on Saturday to be similar in its plot premise to the Iranian film Secret Ballot (2001).

The Iranian Film had won the Silver Lion Award For Best Director at Venice.

We say belatedly because the 'inspiration" charges went viral on social media” once it was declared as India’s official entry to the Oscars.

Directed by Amit V Masurkar, Newton is a black comedy. The protagonist of the film Rajkummar Rao, who essays the role of Newton Kumar, a rookie government clerk is sent on election duty to a naxal-controlled town in the conflict-ridden jungles of Chhattisgarh, India. Faced with the apathy of security forces and the looming fear of guerrilla attacks by communist rebels, he tries his best to conduct free and fair voting despite the odds stacked against him.

SpotboyE.com’s critic, Khalid Mohamed is all praise for Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi and gives them thumbs up for the acting. “It’s wonderful to watch Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi, as the duelling twosome, who’re in perfect harmony with the script. No showy gimmicks to hog the limelight. Both the actors, in their extraordinarly distinctive manner, assert that they can slip effortlessly, chamelon-like into the skin of their characters,” the critic added.
