Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Article 15 is doing well at the box office and has been appreciated and received well by the fans. However, the socio-political drama that deals with caste-based discrimination, has found itself in the middle of numerous controversies ever since the launch of the film’s trailer.
A petition was filed by the Brahmin Samaj of Indian that claimed the film shows casteist elements and was a fabricated story portrayed as a true event. The petition also claimed that the movie spreads caste hatred and portrays upper castes in a bad light. The plea said the film violated the constitutional spirit and sought the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to cancel the certification granted to Benaras Media Works Pvt. Ltd. It alleged that the movie would incite public disorder and casteist violence.
However, A Bench led by Justice S.A. Bobde refused to entertain the petition filed by the Brahman Samaj of India (BSOI). The Supreme Court on July 8 dismissed the plea against Bollywood movie Article 15, saying that the petitioner should approach the appropriate authority instead.
“Why don’t you approach the appropriate authority,” Justice Bobde asked the petitioner lawyer.
The petition was later withdrawn with liberty to approach the concerned authority after the Supreme Court’s dismissal. The film was released on June 28, and has been surrounded by controversies from the beginning. Earlier, the screening of the film came to a halt as a group entered a multiplex in Kanpur and shouted slogans . The film has also been banned in Roorkee, Uttarakhand due to law and order concern.
