Ever since the lockdown was imposed in the month of March 2020, with the outbreak of COVID-19, single-screen theatres and multiplexes have remained shut. This has resulted in many professionals taking pay cuts as well as few even asked to leave due to the financial crunch. With the country being in Unlock phase 4, now filmmaker, producers and even Producers Guild Of India have supported the appeal made by Multiplex Association of India to the government to reopen the cinema halls. This has resulted in #UnlockCinemaSaveJobs to trend on the micro-blogging site, Twitter.

Multiplex Association of India’s appeal to the government in order to save jobs in this sector has received support, with Karan Johar’s production banner, Dharma Production, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, Anubhav Sinha, actor Manoj Bajpayee. Anurag Kashyap extending their support to this movement on social media tweeted, “Dreams come to life at movies on the big screen. There are millions behind the screen who make that happen. Jobs are at stake. Can’t wait for cinemas to reopen! #UnlockCinemaSaveJobs” While Anubhav Sinha just retweeted the Multiplex Association of India letter with a trending hashtag.

A letter penned by the Multiplex Association of India sent out to the government has mentioned the number of safety measures that will be taken at the cinemas in order to follow the protocol formed by the government to curtail the further spread of the Novel Coronavirus.
