Anurag Basu's 2017 directorial Jagga Jasoos, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, failed to impress the audience. Ranbir and Katrina's chemistry was convincing, but the film tanked at the Box-Office. Recently, while speaking with a leading daily, Anurag Basu opened up about Jagga Jasoos' failure and how it received its due when it released on OTT in 2019.
The filmmaker feels the audience understood the film better only when it was released on OTT. He added the movie wasn't everybody's cup of tea. "I won't say I made it flawless but Jagga is not everybody's cup of tea, and the audience it was made for, maybe didn't come to the theatre," said Basu.
Talking about how the OTT audience loved the film, he said, "Through OTT it reached the right audience and got appreciated. Suddenly one day, I saw my Twitter full of fan reactions." And when asked if the film would've worked better had it been released in today's times, he said, "Though I don't know if it had released today, it would've worked better or not. If I had made an exceptionally universal film, then it would've worked at any given time." Anurag's last film Ludo starring Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sanya Malhotra, released on OTT and it received an amazing response from the audiences and critics alike.
Furthermore, when asked what's changed for him with the Friday Box Office coming to a halt owing to shutting down of cinema halls due to the pandemic, Basu called OTT 'the beginning of a new world. He added, "Now when I'm writing stories, I feel fearless. Earlier we were worried whether a story will work pan India or not." The director further added by saying that OTT gave him wings and 'I'm taking a flight fearlessly."
