Bengali actress Sumita Sanyal, known for her role in Anand passed away at 71.
The actress breathed her last at her Kolkata residence at Deshapriyo Park.

Sanyal was married to film editor Subodh Roy and has a son with him. She made her debut in Bengali film Khokhababur Pratyabartan in 1960 and went on to act in over 40 Bengali films including Sagina Mahato opposite Dilip Kumar and in the lead role in Kuheli alongside Biswajit and Sandhya Roy.
To talk of her Bollywood career, she has appeared in a number of Hindi films such as Guddi, Aashirwad and Mere Apne, but the most notable one was in Anand opposite Amitabh Bachchan. More details about her demise are awaited.
Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee tweeted her condolences. She wrote, "Saddened at the passing of veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. My condolences to her family, friends and fans."

Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee also tweeted that he was saddened to hear about Sanyal's death. He wrote, "Saddened to hear about the demise of the veteran actress Sumita Sanyal May her soul rest in peace.”

Sumita Sanyal was born on October 9, 1945 in Manjula Sanyal in Darjeeling, Bengal Presidency, British India. Her father was Girija Golkunda Sanyal.
Director Bibhuti Laha (of Agradoot) named her Suchorita for his film Khokhababur Pratyabartan. After that, director Kanak Mukhopadhay decided to make it shorter and named her Sumita.
