However, now, a few names have started floating around as his probable successors. The three frontrunners, we hear, are: Amol Palekar, Anupam Kher and Rahul Rawail.
Palekar's name had come up for the post on previous occasions as well, but he never made the cut. The actor-turned-filmmaker says, "My name has been circulated and dodged for many years. But that's expected, as I have a reputation of not succumbing to any political party. Also, I'm pro free speech. This kind of an attitude will not be liked by any party."
On the other hand, Kher says he will be unable to step into Nihalani's shoes even if he is asked to. "The CBFC Chief's post has not been offered to me and even if it were, I wouldn't be able to do it because I am too busy," he says.
Rawail remained unavailable for comment.
