While Alia Bhatt’s songs in Sanjay Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi are sung by Shreya Ghosal, there is every chance that Alia Bhatt will be singing for herself in S S Rajamouli’s RRR. …Again! Lest we forget Alia has earlier sung for herself in Imtiaz Ali’s Highway and in Shashank Khaitan’s Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya.
Says a source, “Alia has one big song-and-dance number in RRR which she may sing in her own voice. The only problem is her accent in Tamil and Telugu , in which case she will sing for herself only in the Hindi version of RRR.”
While in Gangubai Kathiawadi Alia’s titular character is on screen from the first frame to last, in RRR she has more of a cameo and may be billed as “guest star” in the credit titles.
However Alia has no songs in her other forthcoming film Gangubai Kathiawadi. We all know Sanjay Leela Bhansali is not only a great filmmaker but also a very accomplished music composer. His love ballads for the now-shelved Inshallah , which I have had the privilege of hearing, are among the most exquisite musical creations of Indian cinema in recent times.
Alia was looking forward to emoting to those amazing love songs. Alas, that was not to be. And now in Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi Alia will have no songs to sing.
A source very close to the project inform, “Sanjay Bhansali has composed beautifil songs for Gangubai Kathiawadi. But none will be performed by Alia. She plays a gangster and singing- gangsters don’t make sense.”
Apparently this film is in the very realistic space occupied by Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s other masterpiece Black.
It is hard to imagine a Sanjay Leela Bhansali creation without a profusion of music singing and dancing. But then the director after three back-to-back costume dramas featuring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone is seeking a break in every way possible.
