Last evening, the industry was brimming with pride and happiness as Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles was announced as India’s official entry for Oscars 2020. Since then, congratulatory messages haven’t stopped pouring in for the team. And of course, the euphoria has not died down. This is the time to know what's going on in the mind of the leading lady’s mother, Soni Razdan.
Over a telephonic call made to her in London where she's doing a play, Soni Razdan began by saying, “It’s great news. This is the perfect film that has been sent for the Oscars. I an very happy because it's a true representative of our country today. It's a cool, young film. It's also an aspirational film. It is about real things that happen, situations that people go through, and also importantly, the whole cult of rap which has been adapted to our Indian milieu.

Soni Razdan further said, “I am extremely proud of the whole Gully Boy team- Zoya Akhtar and everyone associated with its making. The film getting selected for the Oscars is like an award in itself. It's wonderful!”
When asked if she expected this to happen, she said, "All this while, I was praying because I felt that if the selectors have any sense, this is the film they will choose.”
While she went all praises for the film, we quickly reminded her that Raazi which is unarguably her daughter’s finest performance till date could also have made it- she responded, "There are so many possible choices because we have made such wonderful films. It's not the question of which is a better film. But I think Gully Boy is a very good one to have been chosen for the Oscars for the simple reason that it's contemporary; not that Raazi shouldn't have been chosen. But, Gully Boy is a very smart choice because it's current culture, it shows how society is evolving, changing and how young people are breaking out of the old stereotypical lifestyles and coming into their own. It's a breakout situation and a breakout film."
Yesterday, Alia and Ranveer also expressed their joy by stating that it is a proud moment for the entire team.
Bhatt saab must be dancing, we told her. Soni Razdan laughed and said, "Yes"
Congratulations guys!
