Fans of Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar are on cloud nine as the actor has announced another one of his upcoming projects. The actor is all set to star in the biopic of the late mining engineer, Jaswant Singh Gill. Paying his respects to the hero who saved 65 lives in 1989, the actor responded to a tweet by Union coal minister Pralhad Joshi.
When the minister remembered Gill on the 33rd anniversary of the country's "first coal mine rescue mission," Akshay said in a tweet that he was honoured to play the role. Akshay wrote, "Grateful to you @JoshiPralhad ji, for recalling India’s first coal mine rescue mission - this day 33yrs ago.
Born on November 22, 1939, in Amritsar, the late engineer played a significant role in rescuing miners trapped inside a flooded coal mine in Raniganj, West Bengal. Out of 220 miners, six miners died on the spot. Gill jumped to the rescue of the remaining 65 in a six-hour-long, dangerous ordeal. He passed away in November 2019 and is survived by his wife and four kids. He was awarded Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak by the then president, Ramaswamy Venkataraman. A chowk in Majitha Road, Amritsar, is also named after him.
Apart from this project, Akshay Kumar is all set to make his Marathi debut with Mahesh Manjrekar directorial Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat. He will be seen playing the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The movie will also star Jay Dudhane, Utkarsha Shinde, Vishal Nikam, Virat Madke, Hardik Joshi, Satya, Nawab Khan, and Praveen Tarde in pivotal roles.
