Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira Khan is one of the most adored star kids of Bollywood, despite staying away from the limelight and establishing a career outside of the entertainment industry. She enjoys a huge social media following and never shies away from sharing glimpses of her mundane life. Recently she launched Agastu Foundation, with an aim to help and support people battling with mental health issues. Opening up about her battle with depression, she recalled how she would sleep her days away.
In an interview with the Times Of India, she revealed how she was diagnosed with clinical depression over five years ago. Talking about her battle with depression, Ira went on to share that while her parents’, Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta, divorce didn’t affect her much, she had started to notice major changes in her personality. She explained how she wanted to return to India from the Netherlands where she was studying. She would cry for over 8 hours and then sleep for 10 hours so that she would have only a few hours to live during the day. The 26-year-old added, “My mom pointed out that I didn’t want to be alive so I would just sleep my day away so that I would have fewer hours to live in a day.” While her parents; separation didn’t affect her much, she continued to feel sad and couldn’t figure out why that was happening. Ira went on to add that she never informed anyone about this as they would worry about her. She further said, “This period was one-and-a-half years. She told the leading daily that doesn’t have anxiety but cyclic depression, which comes back in phases ‘every 8-10 months’. Talking about the same Ira, who is still on medication, explained, “It’s partly genetic, partly psychological, and partly social. It took me a while to figure it out. But I have mental health disorders in my family. I also did not make healthy choices and I systematically walked into depression.”
Talking about the foundation, Ira’s parents are a part of the Advisory Board of the organisation.
For the unversed, Ira is Aamir’s only daughter from his first wife, Reena Dutta. They also have a son, Junaid Khan. After his first divorce, Aamir got married again to Kiran Rao. The couple, who are now divorced, welcomed their son, Azad, through surrogacy in 2011. Ira is happily engaged to her longtime boyfriend Nupur Shikhare since November 2022.
