The Covid pandemic has affected and halted a lot of businesses. The theatre business in India has been the worst affected one. Indian theatres hadn’t seen a proper film release since March 2020, up until last month. Even now theatres are working at a 50 per cent capacity at most places and are completely non-functional in Maharashtra.
The whole scenario had made filmmakers opt for a direct-to-OTT release for a lot of films. Last month, Akshay Kumar’s Bell Bottom and Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi-starrer Chehre finally took the plunge to arrive in theatres. However, most of the big films are still either playing the waiting game or arriving on OTT.
Amidst this, there have been a lot of speculations about the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi featuring Alia Bhatt and SS Rajamouli’s RRR. Recently, reports of the latter being pushed again made rounds. To this end, Pen Studios chairman Jayantilal Gada has issued a statement putting all those rumours about the films coming on OTT to rest.
The statement read, “We would like to clarify that ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi, ‘RRR’ & ‘Attack’ will release in cinemas. There have been several rumours doing rounds about these films releasing on OTT platforms before cinemas which are untrue. These magnum opus films are made for the big screen experience and would be releasing in theatres.”
Gangubai Kathiawadi was earlier supposed to release on July 30, 2021, while RRR, featuring Ram Charan, Jr NTR, Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn, was looking for an October 13 release this year. John Abraham, Rakul Preet Singh and Jacqueline Fernandez-starrer Attack was earlier supposed to release on I-Day week in 2020 and then in 2021, but there hasn’t been any update on these releases till date.
