DISASTERS OF 2017: Jagga Jasoos, Tublelight, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Rangoon, Simran

We are at the fag end of 2017. While this year wasn’t a memorable one as far as films are concerned, many ventures which had huge expectations attached to them tanked at the box-office. SpotboyE.com lists 15 such disasters.

Ok Jaanu

Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Ok Jaanu was the first release of the year and it brought the former lovers together. But even this factor could not help the film. The venture was a bland remake of the original Tamil film, O Kadhal Kanmani (2015) and failed to do justice to it. Ok Jaanu which was made on a  budget of Rs 27 crore, made only Rs 23.60 crore at the box-office.

Tubelight

Released in the first half of 2017, Salman Khan’s Tubelight had huge expectations attached to it. However, despite crossing the Rs 100 crore mark, it was nowhere close to previous Salman Khan films. Made on a budget of Rs. 100 crore, Tubelight managed a paltry Rs 110.7 crore. It needed Rs 200 crore to be labelled as a hit and Salman had to pay a good percentage of losses back to the distributors.

Bank Chor

Riteish Deshmukh and Vivek Oberoi’s Bank Chor sank without a trace. Neither did the film qualify as a rib-tickling comedy nor was it a gripping heist movie. The makers bore a loss of Rs 7 crore on this one.

Raabta

Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon were linked to each other during the making of the film. However, the viewers didn’t throng theatres to check out their chemistry. Raabta was made on a budget of Rs 32 crore approximately and made only Rs 25.52 crore.

Jagga Jasoos

Jagga Jasoos encountered umpteen roadblocks since its inception and the film was in the making for 4 years. The film could only make Rs 69 crore at the box-office, whereas it was made on a budget of Rs 131 crore.

Rangoon

Despite having big names associated with the film - Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor -Rangoon could not live up to expectations. The film was made on a budget of Rs 61 crore and earned only Rs 28.8 crore.

Lucknow Central

Featuring Farhan Akhtar and Diana Penty in lead roles, Lucknow Central opened on a low note at the box-office. Thumbs down from the critics didn’t help the situation and the film tanked. Made on a budget of Rs 32 crore, the film made only Rs 11.20 crore, thus making it one of the major disasters of 2017.

Simran

Kangana Ranaut’s spat with Hrithik Roshan came under the scanner yet again when she promoted Simran on Aap Ki Adalat.  But despite the hullaballoo, the content didn’t interest the audience and turned out to be a disappointment. Hansal Mehta’s directorial was made on a budget of Rs 28 crore and garnered just Rs 27 crore.

Jab Harry Met Sejal

An unexpected disaster came in the form of Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma starrer Jab Harry Met Sejal. The Imtiaz Ali film was made on a budget of Rs 80 crore but earned a meagre amount of Rs 64.35 crore.

Meri Pyaari Bindu

This was Parineeti Chopra’s 5^th project which tanked at the box-office.  Meri Pyaari Bindu marked the actress’ first film after a makeover but failed to get the necessary footfall. The venture earned a paltry Rs 14.23 crore at the box-office it had been made on a budget of Rs 22 crore.

Haseena Parkar

Shraddha Kapoor’s Haseena Parkar was touted to be one of the most challenging films for the actress as she had undegone enormous physical change for this one. Alas! The film was made on a budget of Rs 25 crore but earned a meagre Rs 12.65 crore.

Chef

Saif Ali Khan’s Chef was another major disaster at the ticket windows. Chef was an official remake of the American film with the same title. Chef was made on a budget of Rs 30 crore and managed to collect only Rs 6.40 crore.

Bhoomi

There was immense hype surrounding Bhoomi. And why not? It was Sanjay Dutt’s comeback venture. However, no amount of anticipation could save the film. Bhoomi, which also stars Aditi Rao Hydari, was made on a budget of Rs 30 crore but collected only Rs 11 crore.

Noor

Sonakshi Sinha, who essayed the role of a journalist in Noor, failed to garner solid collections at the box-office. Made on a budget of Rs 24 crore, the film collected  only Rs 8 crore.

Firangi 

Nothing seems to have gone right for the stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma in 2017. First, the in-flight with Sunil Grover and, then, The Kapil Sharma Show making an exit from Sony, Kapil Sharma’s film Firangi rubbed more salt into his wounds. The film was mounted on a budget of Rs 25 crore, but made just Rs 7 crore.
