As an entertainment journalist and a chronicler of films, people who make them and people who act in them, it is always interesting to notice a talent that has been doing remarkable work. One actor who easily fits the bill this year is Kumud Mishra.

A viewer would have seen him in several films and indeed his appearance will ring all sorts of bells but he may not be able to name him. Kumud is fast becoming the go-to guy for a character actor whose look lends gravitas, who underplays to superb effect and lends respect to every role, whatever its screen length.

To begin with think Airlift. Kumud played Sanjeev Kohli, the Indian official who persuaded the government to send the planes to rescue fellow Indians stranded in Kuwait.  While the heroics of the rescue were undertaken by Akshay Kumar, it was Kumud’s character that stayed with you long after the end credits rolled.

Then came Sultan. Kumud was Anushka’s supportive father, Salman’s coach, whose performance lent so much dignity to the role. With Rustom, he showed his funny side, playing the Parsi media magnate to perfection.

In the recently released MS Dhoni – The Untold Story, Kumud once again performed with consummate ease as an early benefactor of the cricketer. These are just his 2016 releases. He has also done important and well remembered roles in Rockstar, Badlapur, Raanjhana and is getting more and more noticeable with each passing role.

It’s not as if Kumud is a newcomer to Mumbai. He has been a theatre actor for over 20 years and is considered one of the pillars of the theatre scene. And new directors, who believe that supporting actors are as important as the leads in building a film’s milieu, have started looking for talent in theatre. Kumud is just one of them to have caught their eye but more about others in another column. Suffice it to say that in Kumud Mishra we have a brilliant actor who leaves his mark on every film he acts in irrespective of the length of the role. I, for one, can’t wait to see him in his next film.

Moving on, the Dhoni film which released last week surpassed all expectations and despite fears of length and cost, has taken a stupendous opening and is on it’s way to becoming a superhit. Good for Fox Star Studios and definitely good for young Sushant Singh Rajput. Both of whom were looking for just this kind of success to stabilise their spot in the pecking order of Bollywood.
