This Friday saw the release of three content-driven films
- Mulk, Fanney Khan and Karwaan. Sadly, none of them got off to a huge bumper
start at the ticket windows. Their box-office collections (approximate) for Day
1 are as follows:
Fanney Khan – Rs 1.85 Cr
Mulk – Rs 1.55 Cr
Karwaan – Rs 1.45 Cr
This happens, despite all the three films being strong on
content, especially films like Mulk and Fanney Khan which give out a social
message too. While Mulk has received great reviews, Fanney Khan too has touched
hearts of many with its emotional yet funny storyline. Karwaan, on the other
hand, has audience appreciating Irrfan Khan’s work but has made the least money
out of the 3, which is a shame especially when it casts an ailing actor who has
contributed brilliant work towards Indian cinema. There is praise by a minority
who chose to go for such films, but what about the majority?
Rishi Kapoor And Taapsee Pannu In Mulk
Are we so mesmerized by the 'in your face' promotions
that we end up contributing our share towards frivolous cinema, packaged
beautifully and ignore meaningful films like Mulk?
Talking about SpotboyE.com reviews, Editor Vickey
Lalwani rated Mulk 4 stars and wrote, “If
you are an Indian, you can't miss this movie. Does not take sides, yet gives
you the correct picture of present India. Does not beat around the bush, but
does not end before blaming politics. Anubhav Sinha, take a bow! You have
balls. And I am not going to put *** in place of a, l, l. Soorma, Dhadak and Mulk in barely a month---- I am
proud of Bollywood in 2018. Now, the oversaid statement in meetings and
interviews Content is the King' is finally reflecting.” Fanney Khan also
received a thumbs-up as he rated Aishwarya Rai and Anil Kapoor’s film
3 stars and wrote, “Like Mulk brought many questions to the fore of the
present society, ditto for Fanney Khan which asks: Why do we judge people by
their looks? Why do we get angry with our parents when they cannot afford our
demands? Why is it a general feeling that females who have made it to the top
had to compromise? This Friday has been quite thought-provoking. Emotional,
dramatic and funny. The emotional quotient is high but should have been more,
and the comedy quotient lesser. That's the only problem in Fanney Khan, which
is still a must-watch.”

Meanwhile, trade
experts say that the 3 films might have a
better Saturday and Sunday considering the good
word-of-mouth publicity.
But the big question remains- will they ever be able to
make the big moolahs? We really hope they do.
