The pre-release buzz has a great impact on a film’s first
day collections at the box-office and Arjun Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor starrer Half
Girlfriend is a classic example. The film, based on Chetan Bhagat’s
eponymous novel, minted Rs 10.27 crore on Day 1, surpassed a number of films’
(released in the recent past) first-day performance.
However, the lack of positive word-of-mouth is beginning
to show in the box-office figures. For, the film showcased a growth of mere
3.51% on Day 2 and collected Rs 10.63 crore.
Trade analyst, Taran Adarsh tweeted,
"#HalfGirlfriend Fri 10.27 cr, Sat 10.63 cr. Total: ₹ 20.90 cr. India
biz.Growth on Sat: 3.51%”

This week’s second release -- Irrfan Khan and Saba
Qamar-starrer Hindi Medium, on the other hand, has benefited from the positive
reviews and a great word-of-mouth. The film registered an excellent growth of
51.25% on Day 2.
Taran Adarsh tweeted, "#HindiMedium Fri 2.81 cr, Sat
4.25 cr. Total: ₹ 7.06 cr. India biz.Growth on Sat: 51.25%... EXCELLENT
GROWTH!"

The substantial difference in box-office figures is
primarily because of the uneven number of screens. While Half Girlfriend got
2500 screens, Hindi Medium had 1126 screens.
Our film critic, Khalid Mohamed, in his review of
Hindi Medium said, "Unsolicited suggestion: buy yourself a ticket right
away for this bittersweet learning experience."
For Half Girlfriend he opined, "Arjun Kapoor is
laboured and miscast. As a small-town bumpkin-turned-junooni-Romeo, he is
mannered and expressionless. In the title role, Shraddha Kapoor tends to focus
more on her wardrobe and cosmetic niceties."
Evidently, the audience agrees. Watch this space for the
weekend collections of the two films.
