Rani Mukerji’s fierce cop role in Mardaani in 2014 earned her several accolades. The film revolved around child trafficking and showed how the female cop Shivani Shivaji Roy uncovers secrets of human trafficking and resolves the case.

Now, after a gap of 5 years, the actress returns with its sequel Mardaani 2. Yet again, her no-nonsense cop avatar of Shivani Shivaji Roy is back to clean the system. This time, the film delves into horrendous rape cases being committed by a serial killer.

The trailer gave us goosebumps and Rani’s badass cop avatar has been earning praises yet again. In an exclusive chat with SpotboyE.com, the actress spoke about the transition from the first to the second part and the difference between the two films.

“To be very honest, Mardaani as a film was born after the horrifying Nirbhaya rape case because as a nation we all were very angered, we wanted to make a difference, to speak out and channelize those energies correctly.”

Rani said that her husband Aditya Chopra (producer), Pradeep Sarkar (director) were also on the same page as her and felt why not make a film around woman empowerment so the protagonist had to be a female cop.

Rani also gives out an advice to all the young girls out there. “Human trafficking is happening right under our noses. As women and as girls, we need to be aware of the situation and if we become aware, we can protect ourselves.” She emphasized the need for a certificate that would allow 14-15-16-year-olds to watch a film like Mardaani which was A-rated. “It is but natural that I was disappointed as Mardaani was for adults only,” said the actress.

The actress believes that there is no age to commit crime, as today, crimes are committed by juveniles under 18 and Mardaani 2 was made with the thought of creating awareness around it.

Mardaani 2 is an amalgamation of both, says the actress. She attributes it to the success of first part and her character of the tough female cop that inspired the writer to come up with part 2. Rani added that Aditya Chopra wanted a story that could do justice because the first part turned out to be successful.

And here they are, with Mardaani 2 that looks deadlier than its predecessor. Directed by Gopi Puthran and produced by Aditya Chopra, the film is slated to release on Dec 13, 2019.
