“100 crore ki aabaadi mein 100 heroe nahi hai, unmein se main ek hun, I think I am lucky.” That’s Rangeela Raja Govinda for you. Dressed in ripped white jeans and grey sweatshirt, the actor is cool as cucumber.  His career may have seen a dip, but the spirit is untouched and what’s constant is Govinda’s that warm smile. As the actor, who still rules hearts of many, returns to the big screen with Pahlaj Nihalani’s Rangeela Raja, we sat down with him for a frank chat.

Govinda speaks about his reunion with Nihalani, with whom he started his Bollywood journey 29 years back. Ask the actor how frustrating it is to see failure for so long and Govinda gives his struggle a positive spin, “Main frustration dikhaun mujhe shobha nahi deta. I have ruled the industry for 12-14 years, what more do I want? Everyone goes though ups and downs, but I consider myself lucky.”

Govinda also talks about the new generation, especially Varun Dhawan being projected as the new age Govinda. The actor doesn’t mince his words and says, “Dekho body usne Salman jaisi banayi hai but woh projection nahi hua, because people are scared of Salman. They know they cannot afford to imitate Salman or try to get into his shoes. Logo ko jo easy lagta hai woh sab karte hai. I like people being transparent in front of me, so that I can decide how to behave with them. Mujhe dukh nahi hua that people are projecting Varun as Govinda”

Govinda & Varun Dhawan

Ask him if he feels Varun can be Govinda and the actor replies, “I don’t know. I’d just say mujhe jo mila kaafi hard work aur struggle ke saath mila. I don’t know if they are as unlucky or strong enough to take adversities in their stride and move on taking everything with a pinch of salt. It’s not that I want them to face problems, and actually they won’t as they are protected by their parents, a group working round the clock with them. Main alhad tha, unprotected! Mujhe toh lagta hai ki agar yeh ek do dukh utha lenge, toh gayab ho jaayenge." Watch the video above to hear to actor's candid conversation.
