Akshay Oberoi had a  great year with several of his shows doing well on the OTT platform. As he ushered in the new year with his birthday on January 1 he takes time off for a chat.

How did you bring in your birthday?
I had a couple of very close friends over last night. Brought in the new year and the birthday. Now I am just chilling with my wife Jyothi and son Avyaan.

How did you swim through the turmoil of 2020?
It was a difficult year for everyone. However, I think it was a great year for our business. Thanks to the OTT platform, new avenues have opened up and new talents are being discovered.

As an actor long neglected in Bollywood do you feel doors opening up for you on digital?
The actors seemed to have fared better than the stars in 2020. It was definitely the year of good content and acting. This can be attributed entirely to how the OTT space operates. People who deserve to be cast are being given jobs. Hence, why we had such top-notch performances this year across the medium.

Which performances did you enjoy in 2020?
Some stand-outs for me were Pratik Gandhi in Scam 1992 and Jaideep Ahlawat in Patal Lok. With that said, 2020 wasn’t a great year all round for our business. We lost a lot of great talents. Some who have left behind a large body of work for us to study and some who left too early.

How do you deal with the toxicity of social media?
Social media is a beast that we have created as a society. It operates a certain way. And as with anything, if you want to be a part of that universe, you have to deal with the negatives of it. In this case, there is a lot of toxicity, yes. But you have to be aware of what you signed up for. You can’t enter a boxing ring and expect that no one is going to throw a punch.

Your plans for 2021?
I’ve decided to stop planning so much. I think the pandemic has taught me better sense. I hope I approach 2021 with the same energy I’ve approached every year, but just more open to embracing whatever it dishes out for me.
