Prosenjit Chatterjee plays the titular Gumnaami in Srijit Mukherji’s Pujo 2019 release. The second most important character of the film, that of journalist Chandrachur Dhar, is played by Anirban Bhattacharya. And the young actor is all praise for director Srjit Mukherji. “This is my fifth film with Srijitda. He has given me very different characters in each film. From Uma last year to Gumnaami this Pujo, none of the characters I’ve portrayed have anything in common with each other,” says Anirban. He goes on to add, “As an actor I want versatility. I want to hone my craft by playing various kinds of characters. Srijitda lets me do just that. He doesn’t let me get too comfortable. He has actually saved me from being typecast.”

Anirban describes his role in Gumnaami, “Chandrachur is a print journalist who starts on the Gumnaami trail as an assignment and then gets hooked. This character is not based on a real-life person. He is a fictionalised new character.”

Controversy has dogged Gumnaami ever since the film’s inception. However, the storm has not affected Anirban. “The truth is, I wasn’t initially aware of the Gumnaami Baba theory. Before this film, my knowledge of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was also limited. I was not aware of the controversies surrounding Netaji’s disappearance.” What does he make of the hoopla surrounding his film? “Nowadays everything can spark a controversy. Anyone can say anything. As long as the debates are limited to Facebook and Twitter, it’s fine,” says Anirban. He adds, “There is no pressure of controversy on me. Controversy doesn’t help actors. Instead, I have faith in my director and his vision.”
