Asur is a story of three friends. At its backdrop is an event most Bengalis are familiar with-- the world’s biggest Durga idol which was made in 2015. In fact, that idol inspired Pavel to make this film. “I had seen that historical idol four years ago, from Priya Cinema. My film Babar Naam Gandhiji was being released in the theatre at that time,” says Pavel. He adds, “After that pandal was shut down controversially, I planned to make a film on Durga Puja and the artists who create these beautiful idols.”
Being a true Bengali, Pavel loves Pujo pandals. He says, “I am a devoted lover of Pujo pandals. From my childhood, even when my pockets were really empty, I never missed a pandal in the whole of Kolkata. I never felt tired walking while enjoying the pandals. I was mesmerised at the work of the Durga puja artisans. I always thought these artists did not get the respect they deserve and I must tell of their artistry some day.”
Asur is also Pavel’s tribute to great sculptor Ramkinkar Baij. “He is an artist of unfathomable depth and aura. Rabindranath Tagore himself was his indulging patron. Starting from being a freedom fighter associate to his celebrating a radical bent of mind, Ramkinkar Baij attracted me a lot. To me he is an artist in the true sense of the term,” explains Pavel.
Pavel was also associated with the recent Bollywood hit Bala. Happy after the success of the Ayushmann Khurana starrer, the director says, “Bala is my first official connection with a Hindi film. I am happy to be a part of it. Ayush Bhai's tweet has enhanced my spirit even further. I am already working on my second Bollywood project and hope to share the same joy with you very soon.”
