Aneek Chaudhuri is not your run of the mill film-maker. Forsaking the known and the accepted, the young director has always vied for the unusual. Take for example his last three films. The Wife’s Letter, White and Cactus, they are all silent films. His fourth venture is a Malayalam film titled Katti Nrittam. The title means ‘knife dance’. Talking about his film Aneek says, “I had visited Kalamandalam last year and was impressed by the Kathakali dance form. Eventually I decided to make a film on it.” He adds, “I was inspired by the tragical elements of Kathakali. In my film, the killing takes place calmly. You can say its a graceful killing. I have beautified the process.”

Why did he choose Malayalam and not Bangla to make his first talkie in? He is after all a Bengali. But Aneek says, “I was brought up in Delhi and Jharkhand, so my Bengali is not that strong. Besides, without naming any names, I must say that I find many of the recent Bengali films to be pretentious. I have been influenced by Malayalam films for the past few years. There is a richness, a reality and a lack of pretence in Malayalam cinema that Bengali films should learn from.”

Aneek Chaudhuri used to be a teacher, but now he is a full-time filmmaker. “When I’m not making films, I’m thinking of films!” laughs Aneek. He has surely intrigued cine-lovers with the beautiful, hand-painted poster of his latest film Katti Nrittam.
