Abir Chatterjee: I try to portray dark characters at regular intervals

Although the handsome actor is known for his ‘good boy’ screen image, Abir Chatterjee has done his fair share of negative characters. The actor describes his role in upcoming film Asur as a ‘dark character’. Nusrat Jahan and Jeet are his co-actors in Asur. The film is directed by Pavel

Asur is the Bengali word for ‘demon’. And if the trailer of the film Asur is any indication, Abir Chatterjee seems to be the top contender for that title in the film. The handsome actor, though, is tight-lipped about his character. Abir Chatterjee says, “I cannot reveal if my character is a negative one. All I can say is, it is definitely a gray character. It is a real character. And no real person is all good or all bad.”

The audience is accustomed to seeing Abir Chatterjee in ‘good’ roles, be it Byomkesh Bakshi or Sona-da. But the actor is quick to remind that he has plenty of dark roles in his CV. “I did Bornoporichoy this year. There is Kanamachi, Flat No. 609 and Rajkahini. My character in Chhaya o Chhobi was also not of a ‘good boy’. Many people have not watched these films at a theatre. But they are available on streaming platforms now. I would urge them to watch these films. Then they will realise that I play dark characters too! In fact, I try to act in such roles at regular intervals.”

Asur marks the onscreen comeback of the Jeet and Abir duo. The two had last worked together in the 2014 thriller The Royal Bengal Tiger. “That film remains one of my personal favourites. After that, we had both decided that we will work together only if we find a project that excites us both,” says Abir. Why did Asur excite him? “Pavel (director) comes up with amazing ideas. This was one such idea. The backdrop is an event all Bengalis know. The film has been weaved around that event, showing what might have caused it,” explains the dimpled actor. He adds, “The backdrop is real, the events are fictional. I hope the audience doesn’t think that this is what really happened!”
