In the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, the mounting tension at the Indo-China border has only added to the strained relationship shared between India and China. Days after we lost 20 jawans at Galwan Valley at the hands of Chinese soldiers, social media has been buzzing with outrage over the usage of all the Chinese applications in India, including TikTok, and demanding a ban on them. Now, a recent development as per ANI says that the Indian Government has indeed put a ban on TikTok, along with 58 other Chinese applications in India. The tweet by ANI read, "Government of India bans 59 mobile apps. Tik Tok, UC Browser and other Chinese apps included in the list."

An excerpt from the government press announcing the ban states that the move to ban these Chinese apps will "safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and internet users". Further, it revealed that this decision is planned to ensure safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace.

The release stated, "The Ministry of Information Technology, invoking it’s power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order."
