With the trailer
launch, many are waiting to see this unconventional superhero on the big screen.
BUT last night, at Zee Cine Awards, held at MMRDA Grounds, Akshay narrated an
endearing incident about his friend’s daughter, after knowing which you will
believe that Khiladi Kumar is indeed ‘heroic’ enough to make a film like
Padman.

Amidst a conversation
with the award show’s hosts- Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty, Akshay started
talking about his forthcoming movie, Padman, co-produced by Prernaa Arora and
Arjun N Kapoor. The National Award Winning Star recalled an incident about his
friend, Gurpreet from North.
Here goes the
story, as narrated by Akshay:
The
incident took place a few years back.
Late in the
night, Gurpreet was asleep when he suddenly woke up to find that his wife was
not beside him. Gurpreet got up to check the next room, where his daughter was
sleeping. He could hear soft whispers between his daughter and wife.
While he could
not hear the conversation word by word, he gauged that his daughter’s
menstrual cycle had begun and there were no sanitary pads in the house. And the
wife was telling the daughter that if she had informed her earlier in the day,
she would have made some provision.
When the wife
got out of the room, he asked her what happened and she informed him about the
daughter’s issue. Gurmeet got out that very moment from his house with the
daughter and headed straight to a Day & Night medical shop.
After this
incident, the bond between Gurpreet and his daughter strengthened immensely and
the two developed a very frank and warm equation with each other, where the
daughter till date does not hesitate to discuss any issue with her father.

When Akshay
Kumar got to know about this story from Gurpreet, he was quite moved and
started reading up more about sanitary issues in India. To his shock, he learnt
that 82 percent of the women in India still don’t use sanitary pads.
Probably this
all put together, set the trigger for Padman.
Akshay went on
to add that through his film, he wants to bring the awareness about menstrual
hygiene in the country.
In fact, post
the launch of Padman’s trailer, a few days back, when Akshay got out of his
vanity van, he found a group of 7 men discussing about sanitary pads--- which
has ensured him that he is on the right path.

Akshay concluded
by saying, “If we make our wives, daughters and sisters comfortable and strong,
our nation will by default progress and gain inner strength. Yeh defence ki
cheezein toh hain hi, kyunki ladai etc jab honi hai hogi, but this is the
everyday fight which we have to overcome.”
Interestingly,
Akshay made an entry at the show riding a cycle, true to his character in
Padman, which hits theatres on Jan 26, 2018.
Sonam Kapoor
along with Radhika Apte plays the female lead in Padman.
