In what can be termed as victory for Team Padmaavat, the
Supreme Court has ordered that states cannot ban the film starring Deepika
Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures had
knocked on the doors of Supreme Court for lifting the ban imposed by various
states – Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana -- on their upcoming
magnum opus.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices
AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud considered the submission of the counsel of
the producer that the matter be heard urgently in view of the ban on its
release by various state governments.
Talking of banning Padmaavat, Rajasthan CM Vasundhara
Raje had stated, “The movie will not be screened in any cinema hall in the
state. Rani Padmini’s sacrifice is associated with honour, esteem and pride of
the state, so Rani Padmini is not merely a history chapter for us, but is our
self-esteem. We will not allow her dignity to be hurt howsoever.”

Stating that the decision was taken to “respect the
emotions of public in the state”, Raje instructed Home Minister Gulab Chand
Kataria to ensure that the film is not screened in the state.
The Gujarat government issues a circular among all state
departments and asked to ensure that the film isn't screened anywhere across
the state.
We are sure the film’s team has heaved a huge sigh of
relief.
