Here's our conversation with him, this evening:
How are you feeling? Just 3 days to go for your Angrezi Medium...
Totally free and excited to be sharing the joy you feel from this film. All considering, I’ve done everything that I could and I’m not someone who is remotely concerned with things that are not in my control.
How did you go about with the casting?
Dinoo (Dinesh Vijan, producer) decided to pitch it to Kareena and in spite of it being a small role, she realised that it is a pivotal role in the story and so agreed immediately. She was also very keen to work with Irrfan.
Big responsibility since you heming Irrfan Khan's comeback after illness?
I don’t consider anything a big responsibility. Irrfan and I both know we’ve told this story in the most honest way we could and it has a big heart. Just that was my responsibility which I have delivered on.
How did you zero down on Radhika Madan?
Radhika’s audition blew me away. She is a fantastic actor with so much talent. I don’t think we’ve scratched the surface of her potential yet.
Was it difficult to shoit with Irrfan owing to his illness?
It really wasn’t, considering he was undergoing treatment and shooting. We kept the shifts shorter and we were very sensitive to his needs. But ironically the crew fed off Irrfan’s strength rather than the other way around.
When you first heard about Irrfan's illness, did you think Angrezi medium might not happen?
No. Dinoo and I always believed that this film would happen and we were willing to wait for Irrfan no matter what. Somewhere I genuinely believe that this film has been made on pure belief and love.
Would you have gone ahead with any other actor if Irrfan wouldn't have been able to do it?
Never. If Irrfan wouldn’t have done it, we would not have made it.
Did Irrfan say he cannot promote the film as he wants to rest?
Irrfan is not someone who would “want to rest and be away from promotions”. Irrfan is undergoing treatment for his illness and is unable to promote or be put in public areas.
Coming back to Kareena. Were you apprehensive that she might say 'No" since her's is a small role?
Not at all. Why would I be apprehensive about anything before it happens? Kareena is so secure as an actor and realised the importance of her role . She didn’t even want a “special appearance “ mention. She said that as an actor her job is to play a pa in completing a narrative and that’s that.
